For linoleum, melody is Everything. As long as that melody can ride on buzzing guitars and muscular, flowing bass. Influenced by the gorgeous vocals of
(the sadly late) Jeff Buckley, linoleum nod in the direction of the grunge gods, then go
on and make music. Their new single, 'Capture a tree' (press the RealAudio button, above),
shows the more melodic side of
this band, their diversity writ large for the world to see on their upcoming album,
'Floored'.
Single and album both out soon on Intrinsic Multimedia and Blah Blah Blah.
History:
Linoleum is an
independent Australian band formed in 1995 out of the ashes of another Melbourne band,
redfish, bluefish. In 1996, they released the single 'Once Shy' which scored national
rotation on JJJ, and airplay on local Melbourne public stations 3RRR and 3PBS. A P&D
deal with Polygram resulted in the unsupported 'Desire' single languishing in record stores
in 1997, and in December 1997 they re-released their independent E.P. 'Hi Honey I'm Home'
through Blah Blah Blah. Currently pressing the single 'Capture a tree' (hear above!) with
their first album 'Floored' following later this year
Over the last six months, linoleum have had one serious lineup change, with their much beloved
drummer, Marty, having to leave for personal reasons. Their new drummer, John, is
currently doing a great job of filling Marty's godlike shoes.
The Players:
Nello - vocals,
guitar
Songwriter, producer, graphic artist, gofer, and whatever
else needs to be done. Played keyboards in Macguffins, lead singer of redfish, bluefish,
been playing in Melbourne bands since he was small. Sessions with Thanks For The Fish,
Stick Figures, and Kathy Johnston. Declined offer of position as Secretary-General of
Youth Hostels in Uganda in 1995.
Glen Edmonds - bass
Produced demos and played bass for Big Red Switch and former band leader with Souled Out (not
the one you are thinking of). Played bass with garage-grunge band Shaved Apes. His
vampiric appearance and beautiful hair separate him from the herd.
John Collard - drums (October 1997-)
A gifted player, and a notable jelly-snake wrestler. He'd better give me his bio if he
wants to see it up on lights on the web.
Marty Rankin - drums (- July 1997)
Drummed in heaps of bands in Adelaide, including This House Is Jumping and Great Aussie
Bite. Appeared on albums for Emerald Sun and M & G, along with radio commercial work
in Adelaide. Gave two-fingered salute to the family business, and headed to Melbourne to
make music, with Monkey Stone in 1995, and Linoleum from January 1996 to July 1997.
Our Guests (randomly
appearing):
Gid - the saddest
guitar
Nello's partner in crime from redfish, bluefish, currently playing lead guitar for the
enigmatic 'Shirley from Warrandyte'. A control freak with a jazz background he just
can't seem to shake, he will probably kill me when he reads this.
Pete Binz - congas, garbage, scream, the ghost in the machine
Drummed for Matrix Club, The Beat Brothers, and has played with nearly everyone in the
Melbourne covers scene. His voyage into the world of techno has seen him working with artists
such as Psycho Disco and Ollie Olsen. A Feldencreis practitioner who likes to hit things
in a well organised way, he can nearly always be found at home.
Alice Garner - cello
Plucked from the relative obscurity of starring roles in feature films such as Love and
Other Catastrophes and The Nostradamus Kid, and seasons with MTC and Anthill. She is a
regular player with the Xylouris Ensemble and only speaks a small number of languages
fluently. About to go back to France to continue work on her Ph.D. in French History, but
hopefully will guest with us again on her return.
Paul Coyle - trumpet
Spotted busking between Myer Lonsdale St. and Myer Bourke St. 3rd year VCA, band leader
with Jazz Off the Rails, currently leading Jazz Junkies at Ruby Red's. Has played with
such luminaries as Bob Sedegreen and Gil Askey. A hard man who's good to find.
Lachlan Davidson - flute
A music teacher, who claims to be a much better sax player than flautist.
Unfortunately for him, we know what we like, and we like flute. Hopefully we'll work with
him again some time, and he can show us what we missed out on.
